Beginning from Autumn 2021 new PhD students will be offered a 100% employment for the first 12 months of their studies. Then, provided that the student has a good study progress during their first year, Hanken offers an employment for 56% for the upcoming three years (12+12+12 months). For the years 2-4 students are expected to apply for research funding for their fulltime studies, in order to top up the salary to 100%. Hanken offers help in applying for funding. We do not charge any tuition fees for the PhD studies. The studies at Hanken are full-time.

Note, that although the majors welcome applications from Masters of a variety of disciplines, most majors require the applicant to have some background studies/courses done within the major (or related to the major).
If your eligibility qualifying degree is completed in the EU/EEA, and you have a GPA (grade point average) of at least B (US grading scale) or Good, you do not have to submit a GMAT/GRE result. If you have completed your qualifying degree outside the EU/EEA and the UK, you still need to submit a GMAT/GRE test.

The ESRI (Economic and Social Research Institute) is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on a three-year, fixed-term contract for research in the area of Taxation, Welfare and Pensions (TWP).
This research area examines the design of the tax, welfare and pensions system, with a focus on the effect it has on redistribution and incentives to work. Recent work in this area has considered the themes of childcare affordability, carbon tax, indexation of the tax and welfare system, pension auto-enrolment, income adequacy in retirement, homecare support and gender inequality. A key part of the TWP team’s work is the development and maintenance of the ESRI tax-benefit microsimulation model, SWITCH. The team also works on the Irish component of the European Commission’s microsimulation model, EUROMOD. Current research in the area can be viewed here.
Social Research
The TWP team is part of the Social Research Division of the ESRI, which consists of a multi-disciplinary team of economists, sociologists, epidemiologists, psychologists, neuroscientists, health service researchers and statisticians, working in the areas of health and quality of life; behavioural science; education; taxation, welfare and pensions; and social inclusion and equality.
Role Description
The appointee will be involved as a key team member in several stages of this research, including:
- Analysis of microdata covering issues of interest in the taxation, welfare and pensions area
- Writing up of analysis for articles and reports
- Maintaining and developing the ESRI’s microsimulation model, SWITCH and the European Commission’s microsimulation model, EUROMOD
- Applying these models to current policy issues
- Co-presenting research at conferences.
The appointee will receive dedicated supervision and appropriate additional training, such as media training, research methods training, time management and presentation skills. Research outputs are published in a range of outlets including journal articles, the Institute’s own internally refereed publications, and book chapters. In addition, the appointee is encouraged to present at seminars and conferences, both nationally and internationally.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will have:
- A PhD in Economics/Social Policy or similar (or close to completion);
- Strong quantitative skills including a proven ability to use up-to-date statistical and econometric techniques and software such as Stata and Python;
- Research interest and knowledge in the area of labour economics, public economics and/or social policy;
- Excellent writing skills;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Proven ability to work successfully under tight deadlines;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Experience of microsimulation methods and computer programming would be an advantage.
Application Procedure
The role is full-time (35 hours per week - standard working hours are 09.30-17.30, Monday –Friday). Appointment(s) will be on a three-year fixed-term contract basis and starting salary will be €44,584, which is the first point of the ESRI Administrative Officer (Higher) salary scale.
Applicants should note that staff have the option of working on a ‘blended’ basis with a minimum requirement of one day per week based in the ESRI office. This arrangement is running on a pilot basis. Full details will be provided at interview.
