Description
- The Waste Management Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is responsible for the compliant transportation and waste determination of chemicals and other hazardous materials on campus. This position works to minimize the quantities of hazardous chemicals and other materials on campus, implements policies and procedures for laboratory cleanouts and universal waste storage and disposal requirements, and consults on the safe management of laboratory chemicals and hazardous waste. Additionally, this position will guide the campus regarding compliance with regulations mandated by the State of Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), Department of Transportation (DOT) as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Labor (OSHA). The Waste Management Specialist will be part of the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) department under the Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management (FP&M).
Responsibilities: | Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.

Education: | Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science or related field |
Qualifications: | REQUIRED: - Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field with some additional training in handling and transporting hazardous materials (including chemical waste) and chemical safety OR equivalent experience. - Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Chief Incinerator License, OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification, and DOT CDL with a hazmat endorsement are required, OR the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. - Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships through effective oral and written communication. PREFERRED: - Knowledge of chemical properties and hazards. |
