JOB DESCRIPTION
The transport division at the department of Technology, Management and Economics at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has a vacancy at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). The division is one of the leading university groups in Europe in the field of transport research, and offers a strong interdisciplinary environment. The division is also responsible for DTU’s study lines in Transport and Logistics and in Data Science and Management. We have close collaboration with other research communities nationally and internationally, and with Danish Authorities. This includes a large on-going contract with the Ministry of Transport, where we carry out policy support to solve the great challenges in the transport sector, particularly related to congestion, environment, and safety.
We are looking for a strong candidate with a background within transport modelling to become part of the Transport Systems Modelling Section. The section develops and applies mathematical and statistical models of behaviour and transport systems to understand the interplay between travel activities and the infrastructure system. Moreover, in our research we collaborate with actors in the transport sector to with the aim of developing the transport system to perform best possible across different types of travellers, trip purposes and travel modes.
Responsibilities and qualifications:
You will be one of our experts within the field of transport modelling, and will contribute to solving the tasks performed by the section. This includes contributing to the success of the research projects run by the section, teaching obligations and scientific advice to authorities and/or the industry. In particular, the key responsibilities relate to:
- Build/further develop a strong and academically visible research profile within the research area
- Conduct excellent research in the research area and publish articles in international high-level journals
- External collaboration with international academia, internally across the university as a whole and public authorities
- Attracting external funding to the field of research
- Participating in projects and collaborations related to research-based public sector consultancy
- Teaching and supervising
You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
As formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
We have high academic ambitions and expectations and expect you to have already some experience within the field, including a PhD degree and ISI publications in high-ranked journals within the field. Furthermore you:
- Have gained academic experience in modelling transport systems, ideally within route choice and network modelling. Experiences should relate to both methodological contributions and applied research particularly focussing on large-scale applications
- Have a clear and ambitious research vision with the ambition to assume responsibility for both small and large projects as part of your career
- Are good at disseminating knowledge, both orally and in writing
- Have experience in teaching bachelor and/or master students, and are also able to teach in Danish or willing to learn Danish
- Appreciate a close dialogue with your colleagues and collaboration partners about the task to solve, but you can also work independently when necessary
- Are focused on the process as well as the outcome
It will be considered an advantage if you have model experience from several modes of transport, including bicycle transport as well as public transport.

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent Social Science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East to address questions of local and global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, globalisation and development, peace and security, and global order and foreign policies. The GIGA Doctoral Programme (DP) invites applications from externally / self-funded
Prospective Doctoral Researchers
to join the programme starting 1 October 2023. The DP offers an institutional setting that allows doctoral researchers to conduct independent research on topics of real-world relevance, engage in academic debates, and acquire key skills for a successful academic career. GIGA doctoral researchers are fully integrated into the institute’s research structure and benefit from close supervision and tailored training within an international research environment. Through academic exchanges and fieldwork, they engage with the “GIGA regions” and build their own networks. Doctoral degrees will be awarded by one of our partner universities, dependent upon the affiliation of the doctoral researcher’s supervisor.
Mandatory qualifications:
- A university degree (Master or equivalent) with a very strong grade point average in Political Science/International Relations, Economics, History, or a related discipline. Normally we expect candidates to have a GPA of 1.5 or better (German system or equivalent);
- A high-quality project proposal that shows a clear fit with the GIGA’s research agenda, i.e. region-specific analysis relating to Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East as well as questions of global significance on a topic that integrates well into one of the four research programmes of the GIGA. Projects with a cross-regional or a comparative area studies focus are particularly welcome;
- Strong command of the English language (German is not a prerequisite).
